Chicago police consent decree set for Trump admin challenge

ㅤ”The Trump administration will try to scuttle the deal Chicago reached to set new limits on the city’s police powers, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Tuesday, adding that the consent decree reached under the Obama administration would leave residents more vulnerable to crime.
ㅤThe Justice Department will file a statement of interest this week asking a judge to reject the consent decree, marking another escalation of the battle between President Trump and Chicago, hometown of former President Barack Obama and a hotbed of anti-Trump resistance.
ㅤThe new agreement, which Chicago reached with the Illinois attorney general’s office, would limit how and when officers could use force, require more training, supervision and transparency, and create an independent monitor to judge whether city police are living up to the deal.
ㅤMr. Sessions said the city was ill-served by a consent agreement reached in 2015 by Chicago and the American Civil Liberties Union. Under that deal, the city agreed to end street-level enforcement tactics such as stop-and-frisk. The attorney general said that led to a surge in gun-fueled homicides.”

Sanctuary cities pressured with Justice grant programs

ㅤ"The Justice Department broadened its effort to rein in sanctuary cities Thursday, announcing new conditions on four grant programs designed to pressure localities to provide information and access to federal immigration authorities.
ㅤLocalities looking for money from the grant programs will have to certify that they allow officers to report on the status of illegal immigrants, they allow deportation officers access to their jails and they will give advance notice before releasing people the government wants to detain.
ㅤAs a brand-new condition, localities will have to certify they comply with federal laws against harboring or smuggling illegal immigrants."ㅤ

Jeff Sessions slams federal judges for issuing nationwide injunctions hindering Trump’s agenda

ㅤ”‘In truth, this is a question of raw power, of who gets to decide the policy questions facing America: our elected representatives, our elected President, or unelected life-time appointed federal judges,’ Sessions said during a speech at the Federalist Society’s National Student Symposium. ‘Today, in effect, single district court judges are going beyond proper adjudicative bounds and making themselves super-legislators for the entire United States.'”

Department of Justice sues California over sanctuary status

ㅤ”The Department of Justice is taking action against the state of California — including Gov. Jerry Brown and Attorney General Xavier Becerra — for three laws they say obstruct the enforcement of federal immigration law.
ㅤThe Justice Department’s lawsuit — expected to be filed Tuesday night in the Eastern District of California — is asking for Assembly Bill 450, Senate Bill 54, and Assembly Bill 103 to be nullified.
ㅤJustice Department officials explained ahead of the filing that the three laws — which were all passed within the past year — are pre-empted by federal law and therefore violate the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution.”
