Nielsen out at Homeland Security

ㅤ"President Trump announced Sunday that Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen will leave her post, ending a rocky run as the top official in charge of implementing the President’s hard-line immigration policies.
ㅤThe decision, which Trump announced on Twitter, comes just two days after the President abruptly pulled back his nominee to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because he said he wants ‘to go in a tougher direction.’ The moves signal Trump is seeking to shake up his team amid frustration over the spike in migrant families crossing the southern border."

Trump to oust Nielsen as early as this week: report

ㅤ"Nielsen has reportedly told confidants that she is unhappy in the position. Aides told the Post that Trump does not seem to understand the nuances of immigration policy, creating a rift between himself and his Homeland Security secretary when Nielsen tries to explain the challenges posed by some of his proposals."

DHS' Nielsen: Border in Crisis, 150,000 Trying to Cross Each Day

ㅤ"’We have a crisis at the border right now,’ she said. ‘We are stopping between 151,700 people a day trying to cross illegally into this country. This caravan is one iteration of that but frankly, we eventually see caravans every day with these numbers.’
ㅤNielsen called a caravan currently making its way north as one having a ‘moment-to-moment’ membership. ‘This isn’t a ticketed event if you don’t have a membership in the caravan,’ she said.
ㅤ’There are consistently moment to moment folks raising a hand saying they are part of the so-called caravan and then there are others who yesterday said they were part of the caravan, today say they are no longer a part of the caravan. What we are really talking about is the flow of people that are headed towards the United States. They have chosen to break laws along the way.’"

Kirstjen Nielsen: Cartels make $500 million a year from smuggling illegals into U.S.

ㅤ"Ms. Nielsen took a firm stand on the causes of the surge, saying economies in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala are growing and homicide rates are falling, suggesting the push factors back home should be easing. Instead, she said, the booming U.S. economy and lax American laws are enticing the flow northward."

‘Crisis Is Real, Many More Coming’: DHS Sec Warns Of Illegal Flood On Border

ㅤ”Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen warned of a flood of illegal immigration in the coming months absent drastic action, in a Thursday morning interview on ‘Fox and Friends.’
ㅤ’Given the numbers we had last month, they just came out, 50,000 in April is the number that we interdicted or otherwise was inadmissible. That is a 200 percent increase from March of 2017. This crisis is real. There are many more people coming to take advantage of these loopholes and are being trained by the smugglers,’ Nielsen declared.'”

Official: Trump to send National Guard to southern border

Pictured: Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen

ㅤ”President Trump will soon sign an order to deploy National Guard troops to the United States’ southern border, Kirstjen Nielsen announced Wednesday.
ㅤSpeaking at the White House, Nielsen framed the move as a way to toughen an immigration system that ‘rewards bad behavior,’ including illegal drug smuggling and border crossings.
ㅤ’Border security is homeland security, which is national security,’ Nielsen told reporters. ‘It’s not a partisan issue.’
ㅤIt remains unclear how many troops will be sent to the border, how long they will be deployed and how much the operation will cost.
ㅤ’It will be strong. It will be as many as needed to fill the gaps we have today,’ Nielsen said when asked about troop numbers. ‘We do hope the deployment will begin immediately.’
ㅤ’National Guard troops will serve in a support role and will not actively detain or handle migrants who cross the border illegally, Nielsen said.'”

ㅤ”‘We will be rolling out new security measures for applicants from high-risk countries, which will seek to prevent the program from being exploited by terrorists, criminals and fraudsters. These changes will not only improve security, but importantly, they will help us better assist legitimate refugees fleeing persecution,’ Nielsen said at a Wilson Center and Aspen Institute event in Washington, D.C.”

Watch: Cory Booker seething with anger as he yells at DHS chief Kirstjen Nielsen

Pictured: Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J.

ㅤ”‘I had tears of rage,’ Booker bellowed at Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen in reference to when he first heard of Trump’s ‘shithole countries’ remark last week. ‘And for you not to feel that hurt and that pain and to dismiss the questions of my colleagues, with tens of millions Americans hurting right now because they’re worried about what happened in the White House.'”
